Teachings Of The Buddha

On Karma:

Karama Copper

“The results of karma cannot be known by thought and so should not be speculated about. Thus thinking, one would come to distraction and distress. Therefore, Ananda, do not be the judge of people; do not make assumptions about others. A person is destroyed by holding judgements about others.”

– from the “Anguttara Nikaya“, translated by F.L. Woodward and E. M. Hare

True story. It is a personal pet peeve of mine to hear someone comment on someone else’s actions or behavior with: “What goes around comes around.”

In my humble opinion, that statement reeks with judgment. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I necessarily disagree with the words, but it’s the attitude of of self- righteousness that usually accompanies said statement: as if there is some delight taken in the impending karmic downfall of others. Maybe it’s just me, but satisfaction derived from another person’s misfortune (even if they have it coming), just doesn’t seem right or in line with living the Dharma.
