Sutra on Discipline

Buddhist tradition has a long list of prerequisites required of a student before the student is allowed to hear the teachings of the Buddha.  Of a long list of requirements, I recall three.

Do not explain the teachings to someone who is standing up.

Do not explain the teachings to someone who is holding a staff, an umbrella , a spear, a sword or other arms.

Do not explain the teachings to someone who is wearing shoes or boots.

With the invention of mass media and the internet,  teachers have to imagine their words being so powerful that the reader will sit down, take off their shoes and put their weapons down.

Imagine Peace
