I was first exposed to Buddhism when I first visited Bangkok 20 years ago. I noticed homeless people sweeping off the streets that they sleep on the night before. I was impressed by the contentment of the very poor Buddhist population.
In 2007 a military coup quietly took over the Thai government. The monks are no longer allowed to teach in the city because the idea of being non-materialistic is considered bad for the economy. Recently I spoke with a Thai friend to express my distress for this situation. She smiled and said without hesitation, ”It’s okay, it’s our Karma.”
